Fibre approach

Hi,
I'm working on my dissertation, and I get a little bit confused about the approach used by the software.

By reading on the net, I found out that in that aproach, the section is divided in the two directions, so we have a mesh of fibres in each section.

But my teacher told me that in the fibre approche we don't have a meshing but a pile of layers.

It would be helpful if I can get explanation about that aproach.
Especially I wanna know how do the software subdivise the section into fibres? (section of each fibre, their distribution, their form [square or circle] and how many fibres in each direction)
